FOUR PIRATES SCORE IN DOUBLE FIGURES IN 65-53 WIN OVER BCU

Hampton, Va. – The Pirates of Hampton University defeated the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman University, 65-53, here on Saturday, in a highly contested Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference match-up. This was the Pirates’ first game since their win over the College of William and Mary on December 29.
Mike Freeman scored a team-high 15 points for the Pirates, who led 30-26 at halftime. The win increased Hampton’s record to 7-6 on the season, 2-0 in the MEAC. BCC dropped to 6-9 on the season, 1-1 in the conference.
In the first half, It was all Adrain Woodard, as he began the game by scoring nine points off a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the three-point arc. Hampton shot an impressive 47 percent (11-of-23) from the field in the first half. The Pirates scored 10 points off nine BCU turnovers, 10 points in the paint and a mere eight points of the bench. The Cats shot a mere 37 percent (11-of-29) from the field and 50 percent for the charity stripe.
“It’s important the team starts to dominate over individuals and that is what is starting to happen in our last couple of games,” said HU head coach Kevin Nickelberry. “Our players have stepped up and have had better games. Heading into Monday’s contest with Florida A&M, I’m looking for consistency. We are the big bullet and we need to make sure we know that we are the bullet and back it up.”
Hampton’s second half was a lot like the first as they shot 54 percent (12-of-22) from the field and 50 percent from beyond the three-point arc. The Pirates scored 12 points in the paint, 15 points off the bench, and 10 off BCU’s turnovers.
Followed Freeman in scoring for the Pirates was Woodard, who finished with 14 points, Vincent Simpson added 13 and Donta Harrison added 10 for Hampton in the victory. The Wildcats were led by John Holmes, who scored game high 18 points.
Hampton will be back in double-header action as they host the Rattlers of Florida A&M University on Monday, January 14. Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m.
